MANGAPWANI CORAL CAVE - ZANZIBAR

The Mangapwani Slave Chambers, constructed by Mohammed Bin Nassor Al-Alwi around 1880 within a cave and linked to the shoreline 2 kilometers away, are surrounded by a variety of indigenous trees like Breadfruit, Rambo tans, and scent shrubs. This site served as a crucial transit point for enslaved individuals to be traded globally following the abolition of slavery in 1873, particularly in the Middle East. From 1880 to 1905, the Slave Chambers functioned as a concealed location for storing captured slaves before their disposal, serving as a hideout utilized by Arabs for housing their human cargo awaiting shipment.

Mangapwani, meaning 'Arab shore,' is situated along the coastline, approximately 20 kilometers north of Zanzibar Town. Within the coralline rock lies the Coral Cave, a profound natural cavern featuring a narrow entrance and a pool of freshwater at its lowest point. Early inhabitants likely sourced water from this location, but over time, vegetation obscured the entrance, leading to the cavern's forgotten whereabouts.

Subsequently, the region came under the ownership of Hamed Salim el Hathy, a wealthy Arab landowner who employed numerous slaves on his plantations. The cavern was rediscovered when a young boy, in search of a lost goat, stumbled upon it. Local residents resumed using the water, and Hamed Salim organized his slaves to collect it regularly for his personal use. Historians propose that the cave might have served as a hiding place for slaves after the official abolition of the slave trade in 1873.

Moving a few kilometers up the coast from the Coral Cave, one encounters the Mangapwani Slave Chamber, also known as the Slave Cave. This square-shaped cell, carved from coralline rock with a roof, was initially constructed by Mohammed bin Nassor Al-Alwi, a prominent slave trader. Boats from the mainland would unload their human cargo on the nearby beach, and the slaves were temporarily housed here before being transported to Zanzibar Town for resale or to plantations on the island. It is believed that post-1873, when Sultan Barghash ratified the Anglo–Zanzibari treaty officially ending the slave trade, the cave served as a clandestine location to hide slaves, as illicit trade persisted for an extended period.
